Yarlet School | BERRIS PERKINS

Berris Perkins

Many younger Old Yarletians, and many of a slightly older vintage, will be very sad to learn of the death of Mrs Berris Perkins, the Head of the Pre-Prep. School from 1993 to 2003 – formative years for little Yarletians and for Yarlet as a whole.

When it was decided to open a Pre-Preparatory School at Yarlet, we were so fortunate that Berris Perkins, Mother of two O.Y.’s, agreed, after a little persuasion, to take on the role of Head. It all began in April 1993, when she was joined by nine small boys – boys only then!

But numbers increased rapidly, girls joined the boys, and the Pre-Prep. became a thriving and deservedly popular school for these young Yarletians – who would all agree that Berris Perkins was an inspirational and much-loved Leader. They adored her.

But she was no “soft touch”. She insisted on the highest standards of behaviour and manners – and woe betide the child whose socks were down or whose cap or hat was set at too jaunty an angle!

The essence of Berris Perkins’s school was of happiness and kindness. They were happy children and, so, successful children, and they were kind to each other. She set that example – as did her excellent Staff, who would do anything for her.

Yarlet will always be grateful to her – and she will be much missed by many people.

We send our deep sympathy to her children, Brett and Ross (O.Y.’s), and to Amelia-Jo.

We all have wonderful memories of Berris Perkins’s Yarlet years. And she always “Kept Smiling!”
