This was always going to be an interesting season, and so it proved. With a wide range of ability in the squad, we have to make the most of the real talent on display.
Happily, the star players have lived up to their potential in the first half of the season, and the lesser lights have done the best they can. We were better than Foremarke's 2nd XI in our first match, but struggled to put away our chances. Finally, Sean O'Reilly poked the ball home and we were on our way. By the end we had won 4 – 2, courtesy of a good volley from Gabriel Korylco-Bowers, and two more from O'Reilly, who had the joy of a hat-trick in his first 1st XI game.
It was hard to believe what happened in our next match. Both teams threw caution to the wind, and defences werevirtually non-existent. We won a thrilling end-to-end game against Terra Nova 8 – 6, with five goals from Korylco-Bowers and another hat-trick from O'Reilly. He was starting to think playing for the 1st XI was easy!
Our best performance so far came against Wrekin College. O'Reilly scored against the run of play with a superb run from the half way line, but Wrekin led 3 – 1 at half time. A great fight back in the second half, with a goal from Jacob Raine and two more from Korylco- Bowers, saw us win a close match 4 – 3. 27 goals in three matches – this is the stuff to bring the crowds back!
Jacob Raine has been a superb captain, leading by example, supporting colleagues, and dominating midfield. Harrison Hardy-Smith's tireless running and skilful play have been invaluable, while Gabriel Korylco-Bowers' strength, skill and finishing have been really impressive. O'Reilly's goal scoring has been a real bonus, and all the other players have performed up to, and beyond, expectations.
But please, no one is allowed to be ill or injured!
